Intake air goes through the air cleaner (1) to the throttle valve (2). If this is closed and the engine is idling, as here, air must go through a by-pass. The cross-section of this by-pass can be changed to adjust idling speed. Air then goes through the intake air distributor (3) to the individual cylinders.
