The pump relay, which is mounted close to the fuse box, controls the electric power to the pump. When the ignition is turned on, the pump starts. However, it stops about one second later if the engine has not started.
The pump won't start again until the engine starts, or the ignition is turned on again. This is an anti-flooding circuit, which prevents a leaking injector from filling a cylinder with fuel while the engine is stopped.
